Scaup is a winter visitor that has become much scarcer in recent years: 11 dates in the 1970s, 9 dates in the 1980s, 13 dates in the 1990s, but none between February 1996 and November 2003. The photos show some of a group of six first-winter birds.  They can be difficult to pick out from tufted ducks, but look for the slightly larger size and rounded head.  Juveniles and females are dark brown, with an obvious white 'blaze' around the base of the bill (though some tufties have that too).
