A remarkable autumn for American golden plovers (there were at least four in Cambridgeshire, doubling the county total) combined with perfect roosting conditions brought a juvenile to Pumphouse Pit among a flock of 2000 European golden plovers.

Not always evident among the flock of golden plovers, these photographs show the main features: overall a greyer bird, with buffish underparts and a white supercilium.  It was also about 20% smaller, had longer legs (especially the upper half) and primary wing feathers that extended beyond the tail at rest.  In flight, the underwings were dusky.  It was very active, frequently displaying aggression to nearby plovers in the flock.
